black and white boudoir photo

This is a black and white boudoir nude photo I took of Lottie recently using my ultra cheap Canon 50mm f1.8 lens (the one I reviewed in digital camera lens comparison). I was using this lens because not just because it is fast and sharp, but because using a fixed focal length constrains you in ways that a zoom does not and I felt like challenging myself that day!

I set out to take shots with a really shallow depth of field (ie with most of the frame blurry) - so I was shooting with the lens wide open most of the time. However I liked the way the light was falling on her and quickly snapped a few more classic boudoir shots, using the metalwork at the foot of the bed to frame the photo.

Technical Information

Camera: Canon EOS 7D DSLR

Lens: EF70-200f4L at 122mm

Exposure: f8, 1/250, ISO100

Lighting

This photograph uses only the available window light coming from the side. These days I almost always use side lighting for boudoir photography, adding reflectors or fill flash to make sure the face and body aren't in too much shadow. In this particular case, there was no need for fill flash etc as the room is nice and bright. This kind of shot can easily be taken at home with no special equipment (see compact camera boudoir photography)

Post Processing

The original image was pretty good, so there have only been a few simple post-processing steps:

  • Conversion to black and white (by simple desaturation in Aperture 3)
  • Contrast increase by 0.17 in Aperture 3.
  • Aperture3 Skin Smoothing filter applied everywhere (Radius 10.0, Detail 0.75, Intensity 0.5)

In all, the post processing probably only took a few minutes.
